Voltage Regulation & Power Conditioning
An automatic voltage regulator compensates for an incoming supply that runs high or low, holding a stable output for equipment that cannot tolerate the swing — MRI and CT scanners, communication systems, precision machinery, computing loads. Three technologies do it: servo, static IGBT, and relay-switched taps.
What separates a good unit from a cheap one is response time, per-phase control, accurate telemetry, adjustable parameters, controlled fans, harmonic filtering, and a bypass switch. The bypass matters more than it sounds — an AVR without one takes the load down with it when it faults. In servo units the failure to watch for is the carbon contact on the toroid. Low-grade carbon abrades the winding, sparks, and eventually fails, and it is always discovered years later rather than at commissioning.
In a servo unit the incoming supply feeds one leg of a buck-boost secondary while the other leg goes to the output, with a double-acting toroidal autotransformer on the primary and a servo motor on each side. The controller drives motor direction to raise or lower the output. Static units replace the toroid with IGBT inverter bridges under PID control of the bridge amplitude. Relay units switch autotransformer taps to whichever sits closest to setpoint.

Servo, static or relay is the real decision and it has no universal answer. Servo is the most robust and the usual choice at high ratings, but its response is bounded by motor speed and it needs monthly maintenance. Static is the fastest, the most accurate, the most space-efficient and the lowest maintenance, but IGBTs are less forgiving — an undersized bridge or a weak control loop will fail at full load. Relay is the cheapest and simplest, with the coarsest output. We evaluate it per application rather than defaulting.
